Japanese Kinusaiga Quilt Art Workshop – Saturday 28 November 2026 (10am-1pm) Ilkley
Kinusaiga literally translates as ‘wood-silk-picture’. It describes a Japanese craft that uses scraps of fabric tucked into grooves on a board to create a quilt-effect artwork, without sewing!
The term ‘Kinusaiga’ was coined over 40 years ago by Japanese artist Setsu Maeno to describe her own technique for creating elaborate landscapes and cityscapes. She was inspired by artisans who made traditional Kimekomi dolls using use a similar method of padded fabric tucked into wooden grooved forms.  Setsu Maeno ‘paints’ her vibrant, elaborate pictures with antique kimono silk on a wood base – the results are stunning. To make it easier for our beginners, we use foam board. Once you have mastered the technique, you too will be able to develop more detailed pieces, using fabrics from your stash that have meaning for you.
In this half day workshop, led by tutor Bev Colburn, you will have time to turn a simple line drawing into a stunning wall hanging, mastering the process along the way. She will also demonstrate how to  add wadding to your Kinsuaiga pieces to enhance the cushion effect. All tools, materials and fabrics are provided.
If you would rather, bring along your own simple line drawing and Bev will show you how to work it as a Kinusaiga. If you don’t manage to finish your piece in class, you can complete it at home using tools that are readily available from craft shops.
This hands-on introduction is for absolute beginners and those looking for a new and engaging medium to express their creative ideas.
