Crewel Work – 2-day workshop for beginners & improvers – Friday 21st & Saturday 22nd May 2027 (10am-4pm) York

The Bayeux tapestry was an early form of Crewel work but it developed into a sophisticated art form in the Jacobean era. This enriching embroidery workshop introduces you to the intricate stitches and motifs of the Jacobeans, led by our expert tutor Jacqueline Schultz. This mixed-ability class welcomes beginners and experienced stitchers alike. As a result, you will find a supportive environment to build skills and confidence.

Whether it’s your first foray into Crewel or a return to this cherished craft, Jacqueline tailors the experience to suit your interest and skills. Beginners will explore Jacobean designs while mastering essential Crewel stitches, while returning stitchers have the opportunity to expand their technique and design repertoire.

Jacqueline’s class showcases her own exquisite motifs of leaves, flowers, animals, and more, inspired by Jacobean designs. Drawing on her childhood and experiences with the Royal School of Needlework, Jacqueline shares invaluable insights and techniques, including material selection, design transfer, and stitching methods.

The workshop kit, valued at £42.00, includes premium materials such as linen twill, Appleton’s crewel wools, needles, and an embroidery ring. While all essential resources are provided, you’re welcome to bring along personal embroidery tools for added comfort.

Each participant also receives a 10% off voucher to spend online.

Access notice: there are two flights of stairs to the workroom in our medieval building at 32 Coppergate, York YO1 9NR. We sincerely apologise if this prevents anyone from attending.
