In this hands-on, half day workshop you will discover the history and art of Dorset Buttons.
Dorset Buttons were first crafted in the county in the 17th century and eventually employed thousands of artisans in this successful cottage industry. They even adorned the clothes of Queen Victoria and King Charles 1.
You will explore the possibilities and master the elaborate weaving techniques of Dorset button making under the tutelage of textile artist Helen Foroughi. You will leave with at least one completed Dorset button and the skills to continue experimenting at home to grow a unique collection of hand made Dorset buttons.
No previous experience required.
Suitable for absolute beginners and those looking to improve and extend their textile and artistic skills.
Classes are individually priced & include the tools to use in class and all materials, unless otherwise indicated.
Light refreshments are available throughout the day, with a break for lunch to explore the lovely cafés of York to eat out or bring back to the workshop.
Each participant also receives a 10% off voucher put towards a future workshop.
Access notice: there are two flights of stairs to the workroom in our medieval building at 32 Coppergate, York YO1 9NR. We sincerely apologise if this prevents anyone from attending.
