Woven Vessels uses up-cycled materials to make gorgeous, versatile rolled and stitched fabric pots. Fancy a champagne cooler? A seasonal plant holder? Or maybe a bowl to gift to family and friends? The choice is yours. Better still, bring your own special fabric to imbue your vessel with personal meaning.
Local artist & designer, Wendy Gray invites you to enjoy a fun and relaxing few hours learning how to construct strong, colourful and memory provoking fabric pots. This craft offers infinite possibilities. You can create anything from broad based fruit bowls to more ambitious structures like Wendy’s own. You might not have time to finish your individual design in class. But rest assured, you will leave with the know-how to complete it at home. And then move on to more ambitious vessels.
Wendy developed her fabric pots from her love of travel. She’s constantly exploring various cultures, their colours and textiles. Having lived overseas for 6 years, she has also gathered a huge collection of fabrics. Woven into her vessels are memories of trips and travelling companions.
Wendy encourages you too to weave your memories into your pots. Bring along your own fabrics and maybe share the memories associated with them over a cuppa whilst weaving. It might be a memory of a loved one, childhood, special event or even a favourite pair of old ripped jeans you can’t bear to part with. Then bind your materials with coloured threads that complement your fabric choices.
This coiling technique allows you to shape and structure of your pot in a way that is only limited by your imagination.
The workshop includes rope, thread, scissors, needles and some fabric to get you started. We would ask you to bring pieces of fabric and/or items of clothing from home to personalise your pot further.
No previous experience is required.
Light refreshments are available throughout the day, with a break for lunch to explore the lovely cafés of York.
Each participant also receives a 10% off voucher to spend online.
Access notice: there are two flights of stairs to the workroom in our medieval building at 32 Coppergate, York YO1 9NR. We sincerely apologise if this prevents anyone attending.
